Brother of WTO Chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Dies at 68, Palace Announces

OGWASHI-UKU, Nigeria — Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo, a member of the Ogwashi-Uku royal family and younger brother of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, has died, according to a statement issued by the palace of the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State.

Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, the palace secretary, said Prince Okonjo died on May 30, 2026. The announcement was made one week later.

In a statement, His Royal Majesty Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II described the late prince as a devoted family man whose death had left the royal household and the wider kingdom in mourning.

The monarch said Prince Okonjo was “a proud and irreplaceable member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family, whose roots run deep in the history, dignity and tradition of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom.”

He said the deceased would be remembered for his humility, grace and service to both family and community.

According to the statement, issued on Saturday, June 7, 2026, members of the royal family and residents of the kingdom have been reflecting on Prince Okonjo’s contributions and his longstanding ties to the community.

The monarch added that the late prince’s legacy would remain with those who knew him and those whose lives he touched.

Prince Okonjo is survived by his wife, daughter, brothers, sisters and other relatives, the palace said.

The palace extended its condolences to the family and called on sons and daughters of the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, both in Nigeria and abroad, to remember the family in their prayers and offer support during the mourning period.
