Ghana: Raise your children, don’t leave morality to gov’t – Kofi Bentil warns

Kofi Bentil has stated that the government should not assume the responsibility of determining what adults are permitted to view online, cautioning that efforts to regulate morality frequently lead to more issues than they resolve.

Speaking on Saturday, June 6, the Vice President of IMANI Africa contended that instilling values should be the duty of families, not the government.

“You have to raise your children and make sure that they have the kind of morals that make them not want to do certain things,” he remarked.

Mr Bentil also voiced his apprehension regarding proposals that would mandate individuals to present identification documents prior to accessing pornographic websites.

“They’re going to create a whole new bureaucracy which will become the basis for oppressing and trapping all kinds of people,” he warned.

He noted that history has demonstrated that efforts to create what he referred to as a “morality police” seldom fulfill their intended objectives.

“This concept of a morality police, human beings have tended to want to do that and it’s always failed,” he stated.

Bentil further indicated that the government might be attempting to position itself as holding a moral high ground, yet he insisted that regulating personal decisions through identification mandates is not the appropriate method.
