Brazil held by Morocco as Vinícius rescues 1-1 draw

Brazil were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Morocco in an entertaining FIFA World Cup Group C encounter at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Saturday.

Morocco made the brighter start and controlled large spells of the opening exchanges, unsettling the five-time world champions with their intensity and attacking movement.

The Atlas Lions were rewarded in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari finished a well-worked move, delicately lifting the ball over Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker to hand Morocco a deserved lead.

Despite enjoying slightly more possession, Brazil struggled to impose themselves during the first half as Morocco continued to create the clearer scoring opportunities.

However, the South Americans found a route back into the contest through individual brilliance from Vinícius Júnior.

The Real Madrid forward levelled matters moments after Morocco’s opener, collecting a pass inside the penalty area before cutting inside and firing an unstoppable effort beyond goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to make it 1-1.

The goal shifted momentum in Brazil’s favour as they gradually assumed greater control of the match.

Dorival Júnior’s side looked more composed after the interval and spent much of the second half pushing for a winning goal, creating several promising openings against a disciplined Moroccan defence.

Morocco, however, remained dangerous on the counterattack and continued to frustrate Brazil with their organised defensive structure and quick transitions.

Even with 10 minutes of added time, neither side could find a decisive breakthrough as the contest ended level.

The result leaves both teams with a point from their opening Group C fixture and maintains their strong prospects of progressing to the knockout stages.

Brazil will face Haiti in their next group match in Philadelphia, while Morocco will take on Scotland as the race for qualification intensifies.
