Nairobi: Gikomba Market traders are once again counting losses after fire razed several stalls on Sunday morning, June 21.

“A major fire has been reported at Gikomba Market, affecting several business premises. The fire is believed to have started at around 4am and has caused significant damage, with response efforts ongoing. The Kenya Red Cross, alongside a multi-agency response team, is on the ground supporting emergency response efforts and assessing the needs of those affected,” the society stated. While the cause of the fire remains unknown, the latest blaze adds to a long history of devastating fires at Gikomba, leaving many traders counting losses and facing uncertainty over their livelihoods.
Kenyans raised concerns about the recurrent infernos and highlighted the urgent need to address the frequent fires and protect the lives and property of low-income and disadvantaged communities.
They suggested the county government develop and implement effective, sustainable policies to prevent and manage such disasters.
Meanwhile, videos shared online showed huge flames engulfing sections near the Fish Market and Gorofani areas as traders raced against time to salvage their goods.
Authorities are yet to confirm if there were any casualties from the incident.
