Lagos Police Rule Out Terror Attack in Mushin Explosion, Blame Mechanical Failure

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports linking the recent incident in Mushin to terrorism, sabotage, or the use of explosives, confirming that it was caused by a mechanical failure.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said investigations revealed that the incident resulted from the failure of a pressurised mechanical component and not from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) or any criminal activity.

According to the command, technical examinations found no evidence of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues, or blast patterns commonly associated with explosive attacks.

Police explained that the incident occurred following the catastrophic failure of a pressurised mechanical component located outside the affected vehicle, triggering a sudden release of energy.

The impact shattered the front passenger-side glass panels of the vehicle and caused minor injuries to the occupant.

“Investigation established that the incident resulted from the catastrophic failure of a pressurized mechanical component outside the vehicle. This failure generated a sudden release of energy which caused the shattering of the vehicle’s front passenger side glass panels and resulted in minor injuries to the occupant.

“Based on these findings, the incident has been professionally classified as a Mechanical Explosion,” the statement read.

The incident happened on Monday, June 22, at 22 Wey Street in the Shoe Materials Market area of Oke Mushin and initially sparked panic among residents after reports suggested an explosion involving a parked Toyota Sienna.

Early speculation that an IED had been planted under the vehicle raised fears of a possible terrorist attack.

Following an inspection of the scene, the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, assured residents that the area was safe and confirmed there was no explosive threat.

The command reiterated that the incident had no connection to terrorism, criminal use of explosives, or any wider security concern.
