Staff Report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Authorities have apprehended 43-year-old Jerome Jamal Jones in connection with the alleged burglary of a vehicle parked in the carport of a residence located in the Golfview area.
Around 4:30 a.m. on June 22, a homeowner caught sight of an individual rifling through a vehicle in her carport. Upon confronting him, the suspect reportedly shouted at her before making a hasty retreat. She was able to provide law enforcement with a detailed description of the suspect’s appearance and attire.
While officers were on site speaking with her, another officer halted Jones for cycling without lights on Village Drive. Jones mentioned that he typically commuted from his Northridge home, located near NW 83rd Street, to his workplace on Main Street. However, when questioned about being on a campus road, he was said to have struggled to provide a coherent explanation. His clothing reportedly matched the description given by the victim, and he was allegedly found with a face mask and gloves.
Subsequently, the victim confirmed that both the appearance and voice of Jones matched that of the intruder she had encountered in her carport.
Jones has been charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling and burglary of an unoccupied vehicle. He has seven felony convictions (seven violent) and two misdemeanor convictions (one violent) and has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2011; he is a designated Career Offender. Judge Meshon Rawls ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
