March 25, (THEWILL) – Liverpool Legends emerged victorious over their Celtic counterparts on Saturday, in the annual charity game held at Anfield.
The match was organised to raise funds for the LFC Foundation and other charities. Managed by a host of Liverpool legends such as Sir Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush, the home team featured the return of former captain, Steven Gerrard, who is a former manager of Celtic’s arch-rivals, Rangers.
The game got off to a lively start, with Celtic putting the ball in the back of the net early on, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. Liverpool soon took the lead through a Gerrard penalty. The former Reds’ captain celebrated by cupping his ears towards the Celtic fans, who responded with less-than-friendly chants.
Mark Gonzalez doubled their advantage soon after the restart. After having two goals disallowed in the second half, Celtic could not find a way back into the game. Robbie Keane also made an appearance, playing for Liverpool in the second half after representing Celtic in the first.
The charity match was a success, raising funds for a good cause, and fans were treated to an entertaining game featuring some of their favourite former players. Gerrard’s return was the main attraction, and his goal and celebration added to the drama of the occasion.
