April 09, (THEWILL) – Victims of the recent fire incident that engulfed a residential bungalow at Mpam Egbu, in Owerri North Local Government Area of the State, have appealed for assistance from the government.
Narrating the incident, the house owner, Mr Silas Okwute, a native of Nwangele Local Government Area, said that he built the house when he was in service, but he is now a pensioner, pointing out that his property, worth over ninety million naira had been lost.
“On that fateful day, we had gone to the farm early in the morning and later received a distress call from one of my tenants that the house was burning, and on reaching the house, fire Service men and other people were already making efforts to put off the fire, but all efforts proved abortive.”
The landlord disclosed the incident was caused by the 12-year-old son of one of his tenants, who lit a candle stick to look for his clothes and the room caught fire, spreading to the entire house.
Speaking, the wife of the Landlord, Mrs Calister Anele, said they have six children and taking care of them during this period of hardship is difficult to handle, as they had lost everything they once had in the fire including clothes, documents, foodstuff, etc.
A tenant lamented that they had no money to look for a new apartment, and therefore, appealed to the government, churches, and non-governmental organisations to assist them.
