Adamawa PDP Vows To Challenge Ganye By-Election In Court

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State, Shehu Tahir, has vowed that the party will head to court to contest the outcome of the Ganye State Constituency by-election conducted last Saturday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Tahir, who spoke with Punch on Sunday, alleged that the poll was marred by manipulation, accusing top security operatives of aiding the All Progressives Congress (APC) to rig the process.

The PDP chairman specifically accused Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Taiwo Adeleke, of providing “protective cover” for the APC during the election.

“The national vice chairman of APC Northeast, Mustapha Salisu, was caught with election materials in his vehicle in the presence of the AIG, and he allowed him to go about freely without arresting him,” Tahir alleged.

He further claimed that when he personally called the AIG to raise concerns, Adeleke admitted knowledge of the incident.

“When I called the AIG Adeleke in the night and drew his attention to the incident, he said that Salisu did not use the election materials, meaning he was aware of the manipulation deal,” he said.

Tahir also issued a stern warning that if the courts fail to overturn the results, Nigeria’s democracy could be in jeopardy by 2027.

“If AIG is heading the security team for the state constituency bye-election, then the Inspector General of Police should head the National Assembly elections. It means we need 109 IGs, so where is the APC government taking the country to?” he asked.

He added that those who manipulated public wealth in the past could not escape judgment.

“What I want AIG Adeleke to know is that former IG Balogun, Abacha, Buhari, and others are not alive. Whatever they accumulated fraudulently, they will face God on the last day, and the public wealth they cornered will become a problem to their families,” Tahir declared.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed that a box labelled with INEC’s name was found in Salisu’s vehicle.

“Yes, PDP complained that Salisu was in possession of election materials. A box with the INEC name was found in his car, but after investigation, INEC official said that it is not their box,” Nguroje said.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the Adamawa State APC, Mohammed Abdullahi, dismissed the PDP’s claims and praised INEC for conducting what he described as a credible election.

“The by-election was keenly contested. No party was a pushover, but APC came out victorious,” Abdullahi told Punch.

It was also gathered that Salisu and other APC heavyweights lodged at the private residence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Ganye during the election period.
