Akpabio Urges Unity, Discipline as Senate Resumes; Mourns Late Lawmaker and Calls for Responsible Use of Social Media

ABUJA (Sundiata Post) — The President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, on Tuesday called on lawmakers to recommit to their constitutional duties as the Senate resumed plenary after a brief adjournment, urging discipline, unity and renewed dedication to national development.

Addressing senators at the resumption of legislative activities in Abuja, Akpabio said while the National Assembly may adjourn its sittings, “the life of a nation never pauses,” stressing that the expectations and struggles of Nigerians continue regardless of the parliamentary calendar.

He reminded lawmakers that their return to plenary was not merely a procedural exercise but a solemn responsibility to serve as custodians of the people’s trust and welfare.

The Senate President also led the chamber in mourning the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District. He described the late lawmaker as a patriot whose years in the National Assembly were marked by dedication to his constituents and commitment to democratic ideals.

Akpabio said Mpigi’s passing had created a painful void within the chamber and extended condolences to his family, the government and people of Rivers State, and residents of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.

He further used the occasion to acknowledge the ongoing religious observances of Ramadan and Lent, noting that both seasons emphasize discipline, sacrifice, humility and compassion — values he said were essential for nation-building.
According to him, the spiritual lessons from both faith traditions should inspire Nigerians and leaders alike to strengthen moral character and foster unity across the country.

Speaking on democratic engagement, Akpabio cautioned against relying solely on social media for political participation, saying that while digital platforms amplify public voices, democratic institutions remain the proper channels for resolving national issues.
“The Senate is not merely a theatre of debate; it is a workshop of solutions,” he said, urging citizens to engage directly with their elected representatives so that concerns can be translated into policy and legislative action.

He also highlighted the national budget as one of the critical issues before the chamber, describing it as a “declaration of national intention” that reflects the priorities and aspirations of Nigerians across all sectors.
Akpabio expressed hope that the Senate’s committees had thoroughly reviewed the budget to ensure it addresses the needs of ordinary citizens, including farmers, traders, students and workers.

While acknowledging the challenges facing the country, the Senate President said Nigeria must confront them with courage and determination, emphasizing the need for prudent use of public resources to promote development, strengthen institutions and expand economic opportunities.

He urged lawmakers to conduct debates with vigour but remain united in their shared duty to serve the nation.
“As we resume, may the spirit of Ramadan inspire our character and the spirit of Lent guide our conscience as we work for the peace, unity and prosperity of our country,” Akpabio said.
The Senate subsequently proceeded with legislative business for the new session.
