Amaechi Says He Can Defeat Tinubu in 2027 if ADC Gives Him Ticket

ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi says he is confident he can defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election if he secures the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket.

Speaking on Saturday, August 9, 2025, during a conversation on X Spaces, Amaechi said he had never contested directly against Tinubu but understood the president’s “strengths” and “weaknesses.”

“I know Tinubu very well… if allowed to fly the flag of ADC, I will defeat Tinubu for sure,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor insisted he had never taken part in election rigging and had consistently rejected appointments to serve on All Progressives Congress (APC) election planning committees.

“I challenge any politician, living or dead, to come forward and say I was part of rigging,” he said, adding that he would reveal details of discussions in such committees if he won the ADC primaries.

Mr Amaechi alleged that electoral malpractice often involved state governors and the diversion of public funds through government agencies.

“They will bring governors. They will go to government agencies and get money, but the rest, I don’t want to say it until I win primaries,” he said.

He pledged never to participate in rigging and vowed to focus on eliminating electoral fraud if elected.

“I will never participate in any rigging whatsoever… What I promise to do now, going forward, is to stop rigging,” he said.

Amaechi also said he would only apologise for wrongdoing if presented with evidence of his involvement in electoral malpractice.

He acknowledged that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, had likely won in Rivers State during the last election.

“I would agree to an extent that Peter Obi won in Rivers state, but unfortunately, the result that came out was different. How it happened, I have no idea,” he said.

On July 3, Amaechi declared he was willing to serve only one term if elected in 2027, citing an “unwritten agreement” on rotational power between Nigeria’s north and south.
