BENIN – Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma Chapter, on Tuesday embarked on a rally/protest over alleged non-conclusion of the renegotiation of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)-ASUU Agreement of 2009.

The Union also alleged other unresolved issues adversely affecting their members and the university system in Nigeria as part of the reasons for their protest.

According to the Union, the rally/protest is in compliance with the directive of ASUU National, based on the resolutions of the Union’s National Executive Council (NEC).

Rising from a meeting of the Congress of the Union, members marched inside the Main Campus to the Main Gate of the University singing various solidarity songs and calling on the government to resolve the various issues requiring its attention.

“Among the issues requiring the attention of the government are signing of FGN-ASUU Agreement of 2009, payment of withheld or outstanding salaries of staff; payment of arrears of staff promotion and 25-35% wage increase, and the objectionable TISSF (Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund)”.

The Chairman of the AAU, Ekpoma Branch of ASUU, Dr. Cyril Onogbosele who addressed the protesters, urged the government to urgently resolve all the burning issues so as to reposition public universities in Nigeria and improve the conditions of university staff.
