The Anambra State Police Command has detained 38-year-old Samuel Ekezie, a soldier from the 302 Artillery Regiment in Onitsha, for allegedly staging his own kidnapping to extort N20 million from his family.

Ekezie was apprehended on September 15, 2025, following a police operation, according to SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the command’s spokesperson.

Investigations revealed that on August 15, 2025, Ekezie sent a text message to his relatives, claiming he was kidnapped and demanding a N20 million ransom.

Using technology-driven intelligence, operatives tracked and arrested him at a hideout in Rivers State. The police have assured the public of a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
