ANAMBRA: Yiaga Africa warns political parties over voter apathy in polls

The Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, has called on political parties to take responsibility for voter apathy in the 2025 Anambra State governorship election.

Itodo made the remarks on Saturday during Channels Television’s special election coverage, “Anambra Decides 2025”. He stressed that political parties play a crucial role in mobilising voters and engaging citizens in the electoral process.

“If voters are not turning out, parties should take full responsibility. It may be due to ineffective communication, failure to reach constituents, or lack of trust in the parties themselves,” Itodo said.

He added that voter disengagement could also stem from a perceived lack of viable candidates. “Political parties need to do more to connect with their electorate. They must present clear developmental programmes that inspire confidence and encourage participation,” he noted.

On security, Itodo highlighted Anambra South as a key hotspot, pointing out that many leading candidates hail from the region. “Areas such as Ihiala, Nnewi, and Aguata are critical. Aguata, in particular, is a battleground senatorial district. Anambra Central, Awka South, and Idemili North are also highly competitive,” he said.

Despite these concerns, Itodo praised the smooth start of the election, reporting no major security breaches. He urged authorities to maintain vigilance in hotspot areas and encouraged citizens to exercise their voting rights.
