Tonye Cole, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has warned that Sim Fubara, suspended as Governor of Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, will wield ‘zero’ powers once his suspension ends.
Speaking on The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Cole said Fubara is likely to face a challenging political environment. According to him, the governor may be unable to make key decisions without interference.
Cole, who ran for governor in 2023 under the APC, expressed concern that Rivers, a strategically important state, could have a leader unable to exercise full authority.
He said, “It’s extremely difficult, and the governor will find himself in a very tough spot. In Nigerian politics, outgoing governors often try to ensure continuity by supporting a successor. But when the new governor is not left to run the administration independently, conflicts arise.”
Cole warned that such conflicts, often described as godfather-godson battles, usually hurt democracy and the citizens.
He added, “Everywhere that fight has occurred, the people have tended to suffer more. As we await developments, it’s clear that the governor is currently not in a position to make any decisions.”
Advising Fubara on a way forward, Cole suggested he seek an understanding with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to regain some decision-making authority.
“What I would do if I were him is sit down with the minister and appeal for leeway, allowing certain decisions to be taken by me and others by him, depending on the peace agreement in place. The details of that agreement are not public, so the exact limits of his powers remain unclear,” Cole noted.
