APC dominates Rivers LG polls, secures 20 of 23 councils in historic victory

In a landmark electoral triumph, the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured 20 out of 23 local government areas in the recently concluded Rivers State council elections, as announced by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on Sunday in Port Harcourt.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the state’s ruling party, managed to win only two local government chairmanship positions, marking a significant shift in Rivers State’s political landscape.

According to RSIEC Chairman Dr. Michael Odey, who declared the results at the commission’s headquarters, the APC also clinched councillorship seats in 20 local governments, while the PDP secured three.

“This election marks a historic moment for Rivers State, with the APC achieving unprecedented dominance since the return of democracy in 1999,” Dr. Odey stated.

Voter turnout varied across the state, with rural areas recording robust participation, while urban centers like Port Harcourt City, Obio/Akpor, and Akukutoro saw mixed attendance, ranging from high engagement to sparse turnout at some polling units.

Notably, no other political parties secured wins in either the chairmanship or councillorship races.

The RSIEC’s official list of winners revealed that several elected chairmen, previously appointed under former Governor Nyesom Wike, will serve second terms.
