The All Progressives Congress (APC) has nominated Godswill Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta affairs, as the President of the Senate. This development was reported by TheCable.
The nomination took place at a meeting attended by several lawmakers including Abubakar Yalleman representing Kaugama/Mallam Madori constituency of Jigawa, Usman Kumo representing Akko federal constituency of Gombe, and Aliyu Madaki of Dala federal constituency in Kano.
The decision to nominate Akpabio has been met with mixed reactions from Nigerians, with some expressing concern over his anti-opposition stance while he was governor of Akwa Ibom state. However, supporters argue that his vast experience in politics and government will make him a valuable asset to the senate.
The APC currently holds a majority in the senate, and many believe that Akpabio’s nomination will solidify their position and enable them to push through important legislation.
Akpabio is a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and has served as governor of Akwa Ibom state from 2007 to 2015. He was also a senator from 2015 to 2019 and has held several other government positions.
The nomination of Akpabio as President of the Senate is still subject to approval by the senate as a whole.
This development comes as the APC prepares for the 2023 general elections, which are expected to be highly competitive. The party will need to rally its base and form strong alliances in order to retain power.
