The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won chairmanship elections in five of the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed victory in Gwagwalada.
Results announced on Sunday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed the APC prevailing in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje, consolidating its dominance across the territory.
In Gwagwalada, PDP candidate Mohammed Kasim emerged winner with 22,165 votes, defeating the APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who polled 17,788 votes.
The Returning Officer Philip Akpen, declared Kasim duly elected after meeting all legal requirements.
Other parties trailed behind, with APGA scoring 1,687 votes and ADC 1,366.
In Bwari, APC’s Joshua Ishaku secured victory with 18,466 votes, far ahead of his closest rivals from the ADC and ZLP.
Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was re-elected chairman of AMAC with 40,295 votes, defeating candidates from the ADC, SDP, NNPP and PDP.
Similarly, APC candidates Umar Abdullahi Abubakar (Abaji), Nuhu Daniel (Kwali) and Danjuma Shekwolo (Kuje) all clinched victories after polling the highest votes in their respective councils.
The results confirm the APC’s strong showing in the FCT polls, winning five councils, while the PDP got only Gwagwalada.
The FCT elections conducted on Saturday were marred by low turn out, vote buying, logistical issues, late arrival of electoral officials among others.
