Bandits invade another Plateau community, kill two, injure scores

Heavily armed gunmen, suspected to be Fulani bandits, on Tuesday night, invaded the Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing two residents and injuring several others.

Residents of the village, who confirmed the attack to newsmen on Wednesday morning, said the attackers stormed the community at about 10:30 pm after the people had retired to bed, shooting sporadically for over 30 minutes before fleeing into the surrounding bushes and rocks before security operatives could be mobilized.

A resident of the village, Dusu Bulus, who spoke on the attack, said it was unprovoked and caught the people unawares as there was no prior incident that would warrant a reprisal attack by the bandits.

Also confirming the invasion, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Movement (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, told newsmen that the community was thrown into panic by the sudden attack.

“Gunmen stormed Rim Village around 10pm on Tuesday night and opened fire sporadically. As of now, two people have been confirmed killed while two others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital,” Tengwong said.

Describing the attack as a “sad episode in the recurring insecurity plaguing parts of Riyom and other communities in the state”, Tengwong called on security operatives to intensify patrols and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Efforts to reach the spokesman of the Plateau Police command, SP Alfred Alabo and spokesman for the Operation Enduring Peace, OPEP, for comments were unsuccessful as calls and text messages to their phones were neither returned nor replied.
