Bandits on Thursday night invaded a male students’ lodge near Bilyaminu Usman Polytechnic (BUPOLY) in Hadejia, Jigawa State, leaving two students injured and several others dispossessed of their phones.
The attack occurred at an off-campus residence along Malam Madori road, where the assailants reportedly assaulted occupants and attempted, unsuccessfully, to abduct some of them.
An eyewitness who requested anonymity said :“It was around midnight when the attackers came. They caused chaos, injured some students, and took away many phones belonging to the students.”
Another witness, Tukur Danlami, added:“If not for the loud shouts and screams of the students, we wouldn’t have known what happened. Neighbours from nearby communities rushed to help, forcing the attackers to flee.”
Two students also recounted their ordeal.Manniru Magaji said, “We heard loud noises and commotion and saw people running away with phones in their hands. We were very scared.”His colleague, Yunusa Yaro, added, “They entered our dormitory with weapons, attacked us, and stole several phones without warning. Thankfully, we escaped unharmed.”
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Jigawa, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the assault targeted an isolated hostel used by students.
“The location is quite isolated, which made it vulnerable to the assault by the unknown armed men,” he explained.
According to him, police officers nearby quickly responded to the distress call. “From our records, two students were seriously injured during the attack. They were promptly taken to the Hadejia General Hospital for medical treatment. As I am speaking to you this evening (Friday), they have been discharged by the medical doctor,” he said.
Adam assured that investigations had begun to track down the culprits, while security around the polytechnic had been reinforced to forestall a recurrence.
Efforts to reach the management of BUPOLY for comment were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, a youth leader in the area, Garba Ibrahim, expressed concern over the rising insecurity.
“The people here are terrified. Such attacks disrupt peace and threaten the safety of our youth. We call on the government and security agencies to take urgent and concrete steps to protect the students and residents alike,” he said, urging for more patrols around the institution.
