Ugandan musician Bebe Cool addressed the 2020 incident involving the arrest of Nigerian artists Tems and Omah Lay in Kampala.
The artists were detained for performing during Uganda’s strict COVID-19 lockdown.
Bebe Cool denied any involvement in the orchestration of their arrest.
Ugandan musician Bebe Cool has spoken out about the contentious 2020 incident in which Nigerian artists Tems and Omah Lay were arrested after performing at a concert in Kampala amid the country’s strict COVID-19 lockdown.
In a recent interview, Bebe Cool denied any involvement in orchestrating their detention and shared his account of the events.
He explained that during the pandemic, Ugandan performers were barred from holding shows due to government restrictions, leaving many struggling financially.
A promoter, however, was granted permission to organize an event on the condition that no more than 200 people attend. Reports indicate that the concert ended up drawing over 2,000 attendees, breaching the established limits.
Bebe Cool noted that his earlier tweet criticizing the government for allowing foreign artists to perform while local musicians remained banned fueled speculation that he had a role in the arrests.
He clarified that although he publicly questioned the fairness of the situation, he had no part in having the Nigerian artists detained.
Bebe Cool also recounted receiving a call from Nigerian star Davido on the night of the arrests. Davido expressed concern and suspected that Bebe Cool might have been involved.
The Ugandan singer reassured Davido, promising to assist in securing the artists’ release and denying any involvement in their detention. He revealed that he quietly liaised with officials and completed the necessary paperwork to ensure Tems and Omah Lay were released the following morning.
