Warner Bros. has made it official that “Beetlejuice 2” will come to theaters in 2024, more than 30 years after the release of the original film. This unusual horror-comedy sequel is directed by Tim Burton and starred Michael Keaton as a prankster ghost. The new film started production in London on Wednesday, with Keaton and Burton returning to their original roles. Winona Ryder, the original movie’s misanthropic gothic, Lydia Deetz, is also returning to reprise her role in the film.
According to a source close to the project who cannot speak to the public, “Beetlejuice 2” is one of the long-awaited sequels, and the company announced that it would arrive on September 6, 2024. The filmmakers’ plot tightly secured, much of the cast is unknown, with the notable exception of actress Jenna Ortega.
Ortega is a top-billed performer who will play Lydia’s daughter, a role that is still somewhat enigmatic. She has become one of Hollywood’s leading performers, thanks to her leading part in the rebooted “Scream” film franchise. Additionally, she played a delightful role in Tim Burton’s “Wednesday,” a Netflix original series, which earned her nominations for awards.
In the original 1988 film, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis played the deceased couple who engage in the titular poltergeist. Ryder stars as the daughter of the couple who befriends the ghostly residents of their home. The story won an Academy Award for Best Makeup and inspired an animated TV series, as well as a Broadway musical nominated for six Tony Awards.
All the participants are excited about the sequel to the original Beetlejuice film, in which Keaton’s titular character causes chaos everywhere he goes. This release is a victory lap for those involved in the first film, potential cult fans of the new film, and enormous admirers of Ortega.
