September 04, (THEWILL) — Belgium dominated Liechtenstein with a comprehensive 6-0 victory in World Cup qualifying Group J, moving within three points of leaders Wales while holding two games in hand. Captain Youri Tielemans led by example with a brace, whilst Maxim De Cuyper, Arthur Theate, Kevin De Bruyne and Malick Fofana all found the net in a clinical display.
De Cuyper opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a precise header from Thomas Meunier’s cross, guiding the ball into the top corner. Tielemans doubled the advantage within 30 seconds of the restart, capitalising on poor defending to fire home a first-time strike that left Benjamin Buchel helpless.
The floodgates opened around the hour mark when Theate nodded home De Cuyper’s delivery before De Bruyne calmly slotted past Buchel two minutes later. Tielemans converted from the penalty spot in the 70th minute after Alessio Hasler’s high challenge on Theate, with the captain’s second goal coming from a stunning volley.
Fofana completed the rout during stoppage time with a curling effort into the bottom corner, capping off a dominant performance that saw Liechtenstein fail to register a single shot. The visitors were completely outclassed throughout the 90 minutes against Rudi Garcia’s well-drilled side.
Belgium have moved away from their traditional wing-back formation, yet De Cuyper and Meunier still delivered influential performances that proved decisive in the comfortable victory. The tactical adjustment appears to be paying dividends for the team in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
