September 04, (THEWILL) — Tennis legend, Björn Borg, has disclosed his battle with prostate cancer in his forthcoming autobiography “Heartbeats”, set for publication on September 18. The 69-year-old Swedish champion underwent life-saving surgery several years ago after doctors identified an extremely aggressive form of the disease during routine medical examinations.
The five-time consecutive Wimbledon winner credits regular health screenings for detecting the cancer despite experiencing no symptoms. Medical professionals determined he had reached the most advanced stage of the condition, making surgical intervention the only viable treatment option available to him.
Borg now faces ongoing uncertainty about his prognosis, requiring medical assessments every six months to monitor potential cancer spread. He acknowledges living with persistent fear about whether doctors intervened in time, though he maintains a philosophical outlook about life’s unpredictable nature.
The 11-time Grand Slam champion collaborated with his wife Patricia on the memoir, which also details previous near-death experiences and his cocaine dependency following early retirement from professional tennis. Recent interviews reveal his enthusiasm for the book’s publication process and the personal revelations it contains.
Looking forward, the Stockholm-based former world number one prioritises spending quality time with his sons Robin and Leo, along with his two grandchildren aged 10 and 12. He plans to maintain his connection with tennis through travel and friendships within the sport while focusing primarily on family relationships.
