Everton moved out of the relegation zone by smashing high-flying Brighton 5-1 in one of the upsets of the season.

The Seagulls – who secured a 1-0 win over Manchester United in midweek – found themselves behind after just 34 seconds and never recovered.

Abdoulaye Doucoure scored twice before Jason Steel inadvertently turned Dwight McNeil’s cross into his own net.

Brighton made four changes at half-time but failed to find a way back into the match with McNeil scoring two late on – either side of a fortunate Alexis Mac Allister consolation.

The result saw Everton move two points clear of the drop zone while Brighton remain in seventh but crucially still have two games in hand.
