August 31, (THEWILL) — Brighton and Hove Albion produced a stunning fightback to beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, spoiling Erling Haaland’s milestone outing in the Premier League.
City looked in control after Haaland netted his 88th league goal in his 100th appearance, a record that puts him nine ahead of Alan Shearer’s tally at the same stage.
The Norwegian, however, had earlier wasted three clear chances before finally converting Omar Marmoush’s assist midway through the first half.
Goalkeeper James Trafford, under scrutiny after a poor showing against Tottenham, helped preserve City’s lead with a superb save to deny Kaoru Mitoma before the break.
But the match turned on its head after the hour mark. Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler’s quadruple substitution shifted the momentum, and the Seagulls struck back.
Former City man James Milner coolly dispatched a penalty after Matheus Nunes handled in the box to restore parity.
The hosts pressed on, and substitute Brajan Gruda sealed the comeback late on, rounding Trafford to slot home the winner after Yankuba Minteh had gone close.
The result handed City their second straight defeat, while Brighton celebrated one of their most memorable Premier League wins in recent years.
