Celebrity Nepo-Baby Makes Headlines: Bizarre Courtroom Attire Steals Spotlight During Probation Sentencing

Cyndi Lauper’s son, Declyn ‘Dex’ Lauper, has been sentenced to a year of probation following a gun possession charge, narrowly avoiding jail time. His appearance in court was notable for his eccentric outfit.

On Friday, Dex, 29, arrived at a Manhattan courthouse dressed in skinny jeans, dress shoes, a button-down shirt, and a $10,000 Louis Vuitton jacket. He entered a guilty plea for criminal possession of a weapon.

Thanks to a plea agreement, the son of the famed singer sidestepped a potential seven-year prison sentence. Instead, he will undergo substance abuse treatment and must stay out of legal trouble for the next year, as reported by the New York Post.

Judge Sara Litman stated that if Dex successfully completes his probation, he will have the opportunity to plead to a reduced charge of criminal possession of a firearm, resulting in a three-year conditional discharge.

The sentencing follows an incident in February 2024, when Dex was discovered with a loaded Glock .48 caliber handgun and drugs near a location where his friend had been shot in the leg by five gunmen in Upper Manhattan.

As he showed up to court, he flashed his expensive baby blue Louis Vuitton varsity jacket embroidered with various patches. Dex bragged that the jacket had cost ’10 Gs’, the Post reported.

Underneath, Dex sported a Louis Vuitton white button-down shirt with two tigers embroidered on the chest, dark-colored dress shoes and light blue AMIRI skinny jeans.

Joe Tacopina, Dex’s lawyer who had previously represented President Donald Trump, said the plea deal was a ‘great resolution’ for the rapper who hopes to put the incident behind him and continue his music career.

‘He’s a great creative mind and has a lot of things to do,’ Tacopina said, the Post reported. ‘This hanging over his head was a hindrance to that.’

As he was taken into custody at the time of the incident, the aspiring rapper had allegedly attempted to name-drop his 1980s pop star mother to charm the arresting officers.

‘I grew up, my mom is Cyndi Lauper, Girls Just Want to Have Fun,’ he was said to have told a detective.

‘Mostly my head is in the right place, it’s my music,’ he apparently told cops after the bust. ‘I was asking people to call my mom and call my life coach.’

‘All I know is I look up and there’s guns in everybody’s face,’ Dex said. ‘It’s not really my first rodeo, coming from my family that I come from. And my mom and uncles and all that. So I was calm bro.’

Cyndi Lauper’s husband, actor David Thornton, was previously pictured bailing their son out of jail with a wad of cash. He also accompanied Dex to his hearing in February of that year.

Thornton posted his son’s $20,000 bail at a New York City Department of Correction facility.

Prosecutors sought bail of $50,000 cash or $150,000 bond, reported the New York Daily News, but a judge granted $20,000 cash bail.

After Dex was released, the father and son were escorted out of the building with their lawyer.

The troubled nepo-baby has been in hot water with the law times before, after he was arrested in 2022 when he was found to be in possession of a stolen Mercedes Benz.

Dex had been arrested as he sat in the idling vehicle double parked at the cross-section of 140th Street and Broadway, the New York Post reported.

Prosecutors in the case said that Dex told police officers when he was questioned about the vehicle: ‘You probably know who I am.’

Dex entered a guilty plea to disorderly conduct with no jail time in connection with the incident.

As conditional to his plea deal, Dex was ordered by Manhattan Criminal Court to avoid any further trouble for a year’s time; and perform a community service that stretched five days. He faced up to a year in custody if convicted, according to the outlet.

Following the October 2022 court hearing, Dex was seen smoking marijuana – which is legal in New York City – with friends as he boarded a SUV parked outside of the courthouse.

In an Instagram Stories post that day, Dex posted an image of a smoke-filled vehicle with the caption: ‘Court.’

At the time, Dex, who has past worked with rapper G-Eazy, told the Post that he and his famed mother had been collaborating on musical material.

Cyndi Lauper last year told Vanity Fair that Dex’s musical tastes tended to be ‘more underground,’ adding, ‘He’s on SoundCloud and he’s a terrific artist’

‘Me and my mother have a couple of songs that we recorded,’ he told the outlet at the time, adding that the end of the prior case was ‘definitely a blessing’ for him.

In the chat, Lauper opened up about balancing parenting with her career.

‘People said I was so career-driven, but once the kid came, I looked at how I can support everything: Make a record, tour – and my husband would say, ‘Go to Europe, I’ve got him,” she said.

‘I took my son on tour sometimes, but he needed his own space.’

The Daily Mail reached out to Tacopina for comment.
