Chelsea surrender late lead in Brentford draw

Chelsea were left frustrated after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, with substitute Fabio Carvalho denying the Blues all three points.

Enzo Maresca’s men had fought back from a goal down and looked set for victory when Moises Caicedo fired them ahead late on, only for defensive lapses to undo their work in the dying minute.

Blues hit back after early setback
Chelsea fell behind in the 35th minute when Kevin Schade finished off a Brentford counter-attack with a strike past Robert Sanchez.

The goal came against the run of play, leaving the visitors with work to do.

However, the equaliser came after the break. Substitute Cole Palmer, introduced to make a difference in the attack, delivered within minutes by slotting past Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

The strike, which is the first non penalty goal for the player in the Premier League since January, lifted Chelsea’s spirit, and they pressed forward in search of a winner.

Caicedo’s strike undone by late lapse
The breakthrough arrived with minutes left on the clock when Caicedo smashed home a fierce effort from outside the box to make it 2-1.

The midfielder’s celebration suggested he believed his goal had sealed the points, and Chelsea looked in control heading into stoppage time.

But Brentford refused to give in. A long throw from Kristoffer Ajer caused disarray in the Chelsea defence, with two players failing to clear before the ball reached the far post.

Substitute Carvalho pounced, stabbing home from close range, to the admiration of the home crowd and level the match at 2-2.
