Popular United States’ television host, Bill Maher, used his HBO platform on Real Time Friday to accuse the media of overlooking the alleged mass killings of Christians in Nigeria, claiming the tragedy is being ignored because “the Jews aren’t involved.”
During a panel discussion, Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., highlighted the lack of press coverage, thanking Maher for raising awareness of the violence. Maher responded, “Well, because the Jews aren’t involved. That’s why. It’s the Christians and the Muslims — who cares?”
Maher pointed to the Islamist group Boko Haram, which he said is “literally attempting to wipe out the Christian population of an entire country,” before asking, “Where are the kids protesting this?”
“They are systematically killing the Christians in Nigeria. They’ve killed over 100,000 since 2009. They’ve burned 18,000 churches. This is so much more. These are the Islamists, Boko Haram. This is so much more of a genocide attempt than what is going on in Gaza,” he said.
The host argued the crisis has not drawn the attention it deserves. “If you don’t know what’s going on in Nigeria, your media sources suck. You are in a bubble,” Maher told viewers.
The U.K. branch of Open Doors, a Christian charity that supports persecuted believers, described the situation in stark terms. “The crisis facing large areas of sub-Saharan Africa is hard to overstate. It is potentially existential for the future peace and stability of several nations in the region, not least Nigeria,” the group said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
According to the charity, roughly 150,000 people have been killed in jihadist violence across the region over the past decade, while more than 16 million Christians have been displaced.
Nigeria is reportedly considered among the most dangerous countries in the world for Christians, with Open Doors research finding that more believers are killed there for their faith than in the rest of the world combined.
The White House has previously confirmed it is working with the State Department to find ways to curb the violence and support stability in the region.
