Samuel Chukwueze says Fulham must shake off Tuesday night’s dramatic 5-4 defeat to Manchester City and take confidence from the spirit they showed at Craven Cottage.
The Nigerian winger came off the bench to spark a late surge, scoring twice and helping to haul Fulham back into a contest that had threatened to slip away when City raced into a 5-1 lead.
Alex Iwobi and Emile Smith Rowe were also on target in what became one of the most gripping Premier League fixtures of the season.
Reflecting on the chaotic evening, Chukwueze admitted the result was painful but insisted the team should be proud of their fight.
“It was a crazy game. I like the spirit of the team, almost coming back,” he said. “[It is a] difficult one to take, but we keep our heads up. I believed, we believed we could score the next goals. But we have to move on from it.”
Speaking further to the club’s official website, he felt Fulham had done enough to take something from the match.
“The chances we created in the second half were almost there,” he said. “It was a difficult one to take because we wanted three wins in a row and it didn’t happen, but we’ll keep our heads up. We fought until the last minute and on Sunday (against Crystal Palace) we’re going to give everything for the fans.”
Iwobi echoed the same sentiment, stressing that despite the disappointment, Fulham should carry the positives into the weekend.
“I feel disappointed because we didn’t get anything out of the fighting spirit that we showed, but I think we have to take the positivity from the game,” he told the club’s website.
Iwobi began Fulham’s comeback with a well-taken finish early in the second half before Chukwueze added two more to set up a tense finale. Manchester City held firm in the dying minutes to escape with all three points.
Fulham now turn its attention to Sunday’s London derby away at Crystal Palace.
