March 25, (THEWILL) – The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has renamed the national team’s base in honour of their World Cup-winning captain, Lionel Messi.
The announcement was made following the team’s successful campaign in Qatar in 2022, where they lifted the trophy. The training centre will now be known as the “Ciudad de Lionel Messi” (City of Lionel Messi).

In response to the news, Messi expressed his delight on social media, saying, “This recognition is one of the most beautiful I have ever received. A great honour, thank you very much.” The renaming of the training centre serves as a testament to Messi’s contributions to the sport and his role as a leader in the national team.
Messi and his fellow Argentine teammates returned home to a hero’s welcome after winning the World Cup. Their first game since their historic victory was a friendly against Panama, which they won 3-0. The renaming of the training centre comes just days after Messi scored his 800th goal in an international match.
Messi and his team will be back in action on Tuesday, for a friendly against Curacao. Kickoff is at 9pm local time.
