Celtic have announced the signing of Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho on a one-year deal, reuniting him with Brendan Rodgers, the manager under whom he enjoyed the most successful spell of his career at Leicester City.
The move comes just 24 hours after Kelechi Iheanacho’s contract with Sevilla was terminated, paving the way for the 28-year-old to join the Scottish champions on a free transfer.
Rodgers and Iheanacho shared a memorable chapter at Leicester, with the forward scoring 19 goals in all competitions during the 2020/21 season as the Foxes lifted the FA Cup for the first time in their history.
“Celtic Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Kelechi Iheanacho on a one-year deal, subject to international clearance, with the club having the option of a further year,” the club confirmed in a statement on Tuesday evening.
The deal will also ease pressure on Celtic’s board, who faced criticism from fans for failing to land a striker before the transfer deadline. Iheanacho’s arrival is seen as a much-needed boost to the squad as they look to defend their domestic crown and push further in Europe.
The Nigerian forward began his career at Manchester City, where he won the League Cup in 2016, before making over 200 appearances for Leicester. He joined Sevilla in 2024 but spent the latter part of last season on loan at Middlesbrough.
On the international scene, Iheanacho has represented Nigeria 58 times, playing a key role in the Super Eagles squad that reached the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final.
