Commission introduces performance system to boost efficiency

The National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) has launched a new Performance Management System (PMS) to replace the longstanding Annual Performance Evaluation Report (APER), aiming to enhance accountability and efficiency in the public service.

Speaking at the opening of a sensitisation workshop in Abuja, NSSEC Executive Secretary, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, described PMS as a proactive, forward-looking framework that aligns employee performance with the Commission’s goals, vision, mission, and core values.

“This transition underscores the need to foster transparency, measurable outcomes, and continuous improvement,” he said.

Dr Ajayi commended staff for their commitment, noting that their participation in the workshop reflects dedication to the Commission’s mission and the broader transformative agenda of the Nigerian public service.

He explained that while APER provided retrospective assessments, PMS focuses on setting clear goals, monitoring progress, and recognising every staff member as a contributor to institutional success. The system is designed to drive a culture of performance, accountability, and continuous improvement across the Commission.

The three-day workshop is intended to encourage dialogue and collaboration among staff. “I encourage you to exchange ideas, share insights, and help craft actionable strategies that will strengthen our performance management framework,” Ajayi added.

Guided by experts and facilitators, participants will learn the principles and practical applications of PMS, with tailored solutions for NSSEC.

Declaring the workshop open, Ajayi urged staff to seize the opportunity to learn, grow, and reinforce a shared vision of excellence in national service delivery.
