Corps members in Bayelsa State came together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with a unity rally in Yenagoa, the state capital. Despite the challenges that the NYSC scheme has faced over the years, it has remained the champion of national unity, integration, and development.
The unity rally began at the Peace Park, located opposite the Government House in Yenagoa. Staff and corps members from the state commended the scheme for its achievements over the years. The state coordinator, Mrs. Okpalifo Obiageli Charity, flagged off the rally, saying that the event was part of the programmes put together by the directorate headquarters to celebrate the scheme.
Okpalifo emphasized that the theme for the event, “NYSC: Five Decades of Fostering National Unity and Integration,” was appropriate as the corps was established on May 22, 1973. She further stated that the NYSC has remained the champion of national unity and integration, and she encouraged the corps members to uphold the values and ideals of the NYSC.
She noted that the NYSC had provided quality service in all sectors of the economy since its inception. She praised the contribution of the corps members in the educational, health, infrastructural, and agricultural sectors over the past fifty years and rated the scheme very highly in national development.
The corps liaison officer (CLO) Yenagoa, corps member Ogugua Clinton Chidera – BY/22B/2207, spoke on behalf of the corps members. He expressed happiness at being part of this historic event marking the 50th Anniversary of the NYSC and assured that they would continue to serve under the sun or in the rain.
