Court Sends NURTW Member ‘Shamelon’ To Prison Over Murder

A Lagos Magistrate Court sitting in the Ebute-Metta Magisterial District on Tuesday ordered the remand of a 55-year-old top official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamusideen Oladiti, in Ikoyi Correctional Centre over his alleged involvement in a murder case and multiple assaults on Lagos Island.

Oladiti, popularly known as “Shamelon,” was arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on murder, conspiracy to commit grievous harm, and assault causing grievous bodily harm, contrary to the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

According to the charge sheet, on August 27, 2025, the defendant allegedly beat one Imam Ramon with his fists during a violent altercation on Lewis Street, Lagos Island. The victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital, where he later died from his wounds.

“That you Shamusideen Oladiti ‘m’, on the 27th August 2025 at about 1000hrs at Lewis Street, Lagos Island in the Lagos State Magisterial District, did unlawfully beat Imam Ramon ‘m’ with fist blows all over his body, which caused him harm and was rushed to Lagos Island General Hospital, Marina Lagos where he later died and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” read count one.

In a related incident, on September 17, 2025, Oladiti and others said to still be at large allegedly conspired to inflict grievous harm on another man, Omale Samuel, a dispatch rider, using fists and a motorcycle helmet. The victim is currently receiving medical treatment.

“That you Shamusideen Oladiti ‘m’ and others at large, on the 17th September 2025 at Lagos Island Lagos in the Lagos State Magisterial District, did conspired amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit grievous harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” count two stated.

The third count read: “That you Shamusideen Oladiti ‘m’ and others at large, on the same date, time and place within the aforesaid Magisterial District, did unlawfully beat Omale Samuel ‘m’ with fist blows which caused him grievous harm all over his body and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State. 2015.”

On September 19, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that unrest broke out at the Sandgrouse Market following the death of one of the victims.

Sympathisers of the deceased reportedly stormed Oladiti’s office and set two motorcycles ablaze. Police operatives swiftly intervened to restore order and prevent further violence.

The suspect was initially arrested by the police, and has been under interrogation pending prosecution.

Magistrate A. O. Akinde ordered the defendant’s remand at Ikoyi Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter to October 28, 2025, for further hearing.

The case file is to be duplicated within 30 days and sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for Legal advice
