Court To Decide Fate Of Rivers LG Polls August 29

Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt and presided over by Justice Adamu Turaki Mohammed will on Friday, August 29, 2025, decide the fate of the proposed local government council elections scheduled for August 30.

This followed an adjournment in the suit filed by the African Democratic Congress, ADC, against the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), the Rivers State Sole Administrator, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and one other party.

The ADC is challenging the legality of the recently appointed RSIEC Chairman and members, constituted by the Sole Administrator, arguing that the Defendants lack the power to revalidate the election timetable and conduct the proposed election.

The party also contends that the time frame given for the elections falls short of the stipulated time frame that would allow room for meaningful participation of interested political parties.

During proceedings, the court entertained motions on jurisdiction and interlocutory injunction to stop the elections, as well as a motion for joinder filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Counsel for the PDP, former Rivers State Attorney General Zacchaeus Adango, argued that the PDP ought to be joined in the matter.

The PDP’s motion was, however, opposed by ADC’s counsel, A. O. Imiete.

Granting the motion of the PDP, the presiding judge held that the PDP joining the matter was necessary in the interest of a fair hearing before adjourning the case to August 29, 2025, ordering that parties should exchange their processes within 48 hours.
