The Cross River State Commissioner for Education, professor Stephen Odey, has donated ₦10 million to support the reconstruction of the Orierie Bridge in Uchu–Yache, Yala Local Government Area, which collapsed after heavy rainfall and flooding.
The bridge, regarded as the community’s main link across the river, was destroyed, cutting off school children, farmers, and families from basic access to schools, markets, and their clan head’s residence.
Odey, who was senator visited the site of the collapse on Saturday, said the donation was meant to begin work on rebuilding the bridge and to complement ongoing government projects.
“It is only when my people are happy that I am happy,” the commissioner said. “This is a sacrifice I must make, and I will continue to mobilize my community to actualize it.”
He also appealed to Uchu–Yache indigenes at home and abroad to contribute to the effort.
During the visit, Evangelist James Eblabor pledged an additional ₦500,000 in support of the reconstruction.
Residents of the community welcomed the intervention and urged government and community members to work together to ensure the bridge is rebuilt quickly.
