CSOs Demand Immediate Passage Of 2025 Constitution Review

ABUJA – A coalition of civil society organisations has raised strong objections to the House of Representatives’ decision to postpone action on the Constitution Review Report, which contains 44 far-reaching amendments.

The groups warned that Nigeria cannot afford continued uncertainty on reforms that directly affect national security, democratic confidence, and good governance.

The organisations stressed that the proposed amendments address urgent issues shaping citizens’ everyday experiences, community safety, functional local governments, credible elections, judicial efficiency, and accountability in public institutions. They noted that Nigerians from all regions have participated actively through memoranda, town halls, and public hearings, demonstrating clear national consensus on the need for change.

In a statement signed by WOMANIFESTO, WILAN, TOS Foundation, CISLAC, WARDC, GSAI, The Women International, I-Teach Africa, and the National Secretariat for the Reserved Seats for Women Bill Campaign Coalition, the groups lamented that while citizens have fulfilled their part in the reform process, lawmakers have failed to match that commitment. They emphasised that while legislative scrutiny is important, prolonged delays pose serious risks.

According to the coalition, insecurity continues to escalate, local government systems are collapsing, voter confidence is on the decline, and public trust in democratic institutions is rapidly eroding. They warned that electoral reforms are particularly urgent, noting that with INEC’s timetable already released and party primaries ending by July 2026, further postponement may trap the country in another cycle of flawed elections.

The CSOs stressed that the reforms under consideration are not merely significant but critical, long overdue, and indispensable to Nigeria’s stability. They urged the National Assembly to demonstrate leadership by completing the 2025 Constitution Review before the year ends, insisting that every additional delay weakens public confidence while swift action can help strengthen democracy ahead of the 2027 elections.

The coalition reaffirmed its dedication to galvanising citizens, engaging lawmakers, and ensuring that institutions remain accountable until comprehensive constitutional reform is realised.
