Dangote Denies Importing Dirty Petrol With High Sulphur Content Into Nigeria

Dangote Refinery has denied allegations that it imported dirty petrol from the United Kingdom into Nigeria.

The management of the refinery, in a statement made available to Naija News on Friday, dismissed recent media reports alleging that it is importing finished petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria, describing the claims as false, malicious and misleading.

The clarification follows earlier reports, which claimed that the refinery may have imported high-sulphur petrol regarded as ‘dirty fuel’ from the United Kingdom (UK), raising serious questions about product quality, environmental safety, and regulatory oversight.

The report alleged that documents show petrol shipment, described as High-Sulphur Catalytic Gasoline, contained 690 parts per million (ppm) of sulphur, far above Nigeria’s legal limit of 50 ppm, as approved under the country’s Clean Fuels policy, was brought into Nigeria by Dangote Refinery.

However, the company has denied the allegation, explaining that the cargo in question is an intermediate stock, not finished petrol, which will be refined to meet Nigerian and international quality standards.

The Refinery reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest standards of quality and transparency and delivering cleaner fuels in Nigeria and beyond.
