Five persons have been confirmed dead after a truck reportedly belonging to Dangote Cement rammed into a tricycle at the Alapoka area along the Papalanto–Ilaro Road in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The tragic incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, following a brake failure, according to the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi.
Akinbiyi said the accident involved an unregistered tricycle conveying five passengers and a Dangote truck with registration number GRZ 767 XA.
All occupants of the tricycle reportedly died on the spot.
“The accident involved an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck with the number plate GRZ 767 XA. The tricycle was conveying five people. The five people died on the spot.
“According to an eyewitness, the truck lost its brakes and rammed into the tricycle, but unfortunately the driver was not observant that he had collided with the tricycle until its tyre crushed the tricycle and the passengers,” Akinbiyi said.
Upon receiving the distress report, TRACE’s Acting Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, and the Ilaro Divisional Commander, Salako Idowu, led a rescue operation to the scene.
However, the team was reportedly attacked by irate residents angered by the loss of lives.
The situation was eventually calmed by the intervention of Amotekun Corps operatives.
The remains of the victims have since been deposited in a morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
