March 11, (THEWILL) – Lyon and Lille played out a thrilling 3-3 draw on Friday night, with both teams maintaining their hopes of a European qualification alive.
The Laurent Blanc-led Lyon side enjoyed a fair bit of possession, but Lille caught them napping at the start of the second half, scoring two goals in quick succession through Jonathan David. However, Lyon fought back with Alexandre Lacazette returning from injury to score twice and snatch a point for the visitors in a dramatic end-to-end encounter.
Lille thought they had secured the win in the dying seconds of the game when referee Benoît Bastien awarded them a penalty, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review. Lille will be disappointed to have dropped points in the race for the European qualifying spots, while Lyon will leave northern France with a big sigh of relief.
Although Lille dominated proceedings, they failed to make it count on the scoreboard, losing two crucial points in their quest for European qualification. On Friday, Lyon will host Nantes and the next day, Lille will take to the road for their fixture against Toulouse.
