The Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment has taken the awareness campaign on clean cooking to Maiduguri, Borno State.

The clean cooking stove awareness campaign and distribution was carried out under the Presidential initiative for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

At the event on Tuesday, the Director, Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment, Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe said that traditional cooking methods using firewood and charcoal not only pose serious health risks due to indoor air pollution but also contribute to deforestation and climate change.

She said the issue has a strong social, physical and economic dimension.

“Global climate change is today a matter of concern to every country in the world. The developing countries (Nigeria inclusive) are not immune to the impacts of climate change, and we can only ignore discussion and decisions concerning it at our own peril,” she said.

“According to the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC), Africa, among the developing countries of the world, stands out as the most vulnerable continent and region to the impacts of climate change (IPCC 2001), and therefore one of the world regions which deserves attention to adapt and alleviate such impacts.

The Director said the Nigerian Government is committed to its renewed hope agenda in which one of its Focus areas is to unlock Energy and Natural resource for sustainable development.

“Achieving this, the Federal government is committed to support domestication of the clean cooking policy by implementing the key recommendations and embarking on extensive awareness to communicate the co-benefits that cleaner cooking solutions brings and provide technical and business training while building the capacity of local producers and distributors.

“In line with the above, the Federal Ministry of Environment has under the presidential initiative on climate change made a significant step forward in our shared mission to promote cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable cooking solutions in our communities.

“Through this campaign, we aim to raise awareness about the dangers of unsafe cooking practices and introduce clean cook stoves as a safer, more efficient alternative.

She commended the Management of the Federal Ministry of Environment, the staff of Department of Climate Change, the State Field Office and the Borno State Ministry of Environment, partners, local manufacturers and supporters for the success of the programme.

The event at the Borno State Ministry of Environment was attended by community leaders, women groups and youth organizations.
