Security operatives believed to be officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Wednesday night as soon as he was released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Naija News recalls that El-Rufai had been in the EFCC custody since Monday when he turned up at the office of the anti-graft agency to answer questions.
It was gathered that the former Governor was granted bail about 8 pm on Wednesday, but was immediately picked up by armed operatives, who laid an ambush for him at the premises of the EFCC headquarters.
While multiple sources affirm that El-Rufai was arrested by the secret police, some other sources claim the former Governor might have been arrested by agents from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which is also investigating him for alleged corruption.
However, a security source in the EFCC confirmed to Vanguard on Wednesday night that El-Rufai is now in DSS custody.
“Yes, it’s true. We released him tonight, but another security agency immediately arrested him. He is now in DSS custody,” the source said.
Naija News recalls that the DSS on Monday, charged El-Rufai to court over cybercrime allegations linked to the claim that he unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
The DSS action is said to be tied to separate allegations involving cybercrime, including claims of unlawful interception of phone communications allegedly connected to the Office of the National Security Adviser.
