E-Waste Day: Organisation urges responsible waste management for sustainable future

The E-waste Producer Responsibility Organization of Nigeria (EPRON), on Wednesday urged for a responsible e-waste management to foster environmental sustainability for the future.

EPRON, an affiliate of the international body known as WEEE Forum, made the call in a statement in Lagos to announce its 2025 E-Waste Day.

The day is set aside to educate people on the dangers of e-waste to the ecosystem and humanity would be commemorated on Oct. 14.

It has the theme,” Recycle Your E-waste, its Critical”

The activities to mark the day includes conferences, events to highlight the dangers of e-waste, e-waste collections, press and social media campaigns, school lectures and art performances.

EPRON is dedicated to advancing Circular Economy (CE) in the Electrical and Electronic Sector.

The body described the indiscriminate e-waste disposal as a time bomb capable of halting life in the environment if not checked.

According to the body the day will serve to raise campaign, educate stakeholders and the public across the nation to join the global campaign focused on Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) present in electronic waste and ways to manage it.

“It will call for actionable collective actions toward a responsible e-waste management for a cleaner, sustainable future.

“International E-Waste Day, initiated by the WEEE Forum in 2018, is the world’s largest awareness raising campaign on the importance of responsible e-waste management.

“In 2024 160 organisations from 47 countries of six continents joined the celebrations, including the representatives of producer responsibility organizations, recyclers, producers, NGOs, schools, universities, national authorities and municipalities,” he said.

It noted that, the Director General of WEEE Forum, Mr Pascal Leroy, expressed satisfaction with the results of the 2024 campaign.

It said that Leroy, expressed delight in the participation of major corporations, authorities, and international organisations to small businesses, schools, universities, NGOs, and other key players in the e-waste.

The event, is being supported by IHS Nigeria Limited, International Labour Organization (ILO), United Nations International Development Organization (UNIDO) funded by the European Union (EU).

Others were the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

It would will engage young minds nationwide through the IEWD 2025 Student Essay Competition. The competition is open to Junior and Senior Secondary School students across Nigeria and is designed to
foster awareness about CRMs and circular economy solutions.
