Edo Assembly confirms rejected commissioner-nominee after 83 days

Eighty-three days since his initial rejection, the Edo State House of Assembly has confirmed Hon. Chris Ewere Okaeben as Commissioner.

Governor Monday Okpebholo had nominated Okaeben alongside six others as commissioner-designates to the House for screening and confirmation.

However, on September 30, the House screened and confirmed six of the nominees but rejected Okaeben, citing an alleged petition against him before the Department of State Services (DSS).

The House Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, subsequently stated that once Okaeben cleared the DSS process, the House could proceed with his confirmation.

Following this, on December 23, the governor sent a letter to the Assembly requesting the conclusion of Okaeben’s screening and confirmation.

The letter, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, and addressed to Speaker Agbebaku, urged the lawmakers to finalise the screening process and confirm Chris Okaeben.

Acting on the governor’s request, the House screened and confirmed Okaeben as the state’s 27th commissioner.

Daily Trust reports that Okaeben was among 14 members-elect of the State House of Assembly who were not inaugurated by former Governor Godwin Obaseki on July 17, 2019.
