Edo NSCDC Commandant Agun Gbenga Slumps And Dies At Benin Event

The Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Agun Gbenga, collapsed and died on Thursday during a public event in Benin City, the state capital.

It was gathered that Agun Gbenga had just delivered a goodwill message at a programme organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates, held at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre, when he suddenly slumped on his seat.

According to Punch, first aid efforts were made immediately, but all attempts to revive him failed. He was later rushed to the Military Hospital in Benin, where doctors confirmed him dead.

The sudden death threw the venue into confusion, with many participants shocked as Gbenga had appeared healthy when he arrived. Some rushed out in disbelief, speculating about what might have caused his collapse.

An eyewitness, Odion Ugbe, described the late commandant as a dedicated officer who had been full of life just moments before.

He recalled speaking with him at another event last week, where Gbenga shared thoughts on improving security in Nigeria.

Ugbe said, “It is unfortunate that the man had to die this way. He came into the hall full of life, but he was carried out dead. He had just read his speech, and he was sitting down when he slumped.

“People with medical experience tried to resuscitate him, but could not succeed. By the time he was taken to the military hospital, he was said to have been brought in dead by the doctor in charge.”

The spokesperson for the NSCDC headquarters, Afolabi Babawale confirmed the incident saying: “Yes, it is true that we lost the Edo State Commandant this afternoon. He slumped in a function.”

KanyiDaily recalls that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) also announced the sudden death of its Deputy Publicity Secretary in Imo State, Hon. Ugochimereze Chinedu Asuzu.
