Edo Upgrades Cold Chain Equipment To Boost Vaccine Storage, Immunisation

Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo

The Edo State Government has upgraded facilities at its Central Cold Store in Benin City to improve vaccine storage, distribution, and overall immunisation services across the state.

The upgrade, approved by Governor Monday Okpebholo, is said to be part of efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure ahead of the Measles-Rubella catch-up Vaccination Campaign scheduled for January 2026.

In a statement shared via its Facebook Page on Wednesday, the Executive Secretary of the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (EDSPHCDA), Coulson Oahimire Osoikhia, said the new cold rooms would significantly improve vaccine management.

“Just one of the newly restored cold room units can store over 6,250 litres of vaccines, and several such units are now operational.

“The Governor’s approval for these repairs has restored our vaccine storage capacity and strengthened the immunisation system statewide,” Oahimire said.

He appreciated the development partners, including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF, for training healthcare workers on vaccine handling and management.

The Director of Disease Control and Immunisation, Efeomon Eseigbe, described the intervention as a major step toward revitalising Edo’s cold chain system.

“Fixing this equipment has restored our capacity to safely store and distribute potent vaccines across all 18 Local Government Areas.

The cold rooms had been down for years, but now we can confidently deliver thousands of doses,” Eseigbe said.

The State Cold Store Officer, Joshua Egunmwendia, expressed appreciation to the Governor and partners for their support, noting that the new equipment will ensure vaccines remain within the required temperature range of +2°C to +8°C.

“Two additional refrigerators have been installed to meet capacity needs as we prepare for the upcoming Measles-Rubella campaign.

“The upgrades guarantee optimal vaccine management and a more reliable supply chain,” Egunmwendia added.
