EFL legend Ronnie Moore diagnosed with incurable cancer

EFL icon Ronnie Moore has been diagnosed with Myeloma, a type of blood cancer.

The 72-year-old will receive treatment in the coming months and is awaiting a stem cell transplant for a cancer that is sadly incurable.

In his playing days he represented Tranmere and Rotherham, as well as Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic.

The news of Moore’s incurable cancer was announced on Wednesday.

He is said to still be feeling well currently and he is walking regularly, and he is still expected to attend football games.

The icon built his high reputation in the EFL over an incredible 54 career as a player and manager.

He began his playing days at Tranmere in 1971 before going on to join Cardiff for a massive club-record £120,000 fee.

Moore would then go on to leave only a year later and sign for Rotherham in 1980, with a stint at Charlton following that.

The former striker then ended his playing career back at Tranmere, where it all started 17 years earlier.

The Rovers sent a message to Moore following the news, writing: “Everyone at Tranmere Rovers sends love, thoughts & strength to Rovers legend and ex-manager @ronniemoore53, following his diagnosis with Myeloma. We’re all with you, Ronnie”

His managerial career started straight after his retirement and he would remain at Tranmere for another nine years.

Moore went on to manage Southport, Rotherham, Oldham, Hartlepool and his most recent job was with Eastleigh in 2016.

Over half a century in the EFL he became a legend and it’s no surprise to see such an outpouring of support for him.

‘A true legend’ Moore spent three years as a player at Rotherham, making over 100 appearances and scoring over 50 goals for the club.

He then went on to have two stints as manager of the Millers, taking charge from 1997 until 2005 and from 2009 to 2011.

And the club has posted a message for Moore after his diagnosis.

Moore is a legend of the EFL and the tributes have been pouring in It reads: “A true legend of the football club, Ronnie will continue to be welcome to attend matches at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

“And he will, of course, have the full backing of everyone at Rotherham United throughout the journey that lies ahead.

“We know that our fan base and the wider football family will join us in offering our unequivocal support to an immeasurably respected and rightly-celebrated individual.

“And we are confident that will be done in a way which respects the privacy of Ronnie, his family and his friends.

“We’re all right with you, Ronnie.”
