Euracare empathises with Adichie, says patient was critically ill on arrival

Euracare Multispecialist Hospital has expressed deep sympathy to renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and her family following the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, saying the child was critically ill before being referred to its facility.

In a statement signed by its management, the hospital described the loss of a child as “beyond words” and conveyed its condolences to Adichie, her husband and the entire family during what it called a deeply distressing period.

Euracare said it was compelled to clarify what it described as inaccuracies in some reports surrounding the circumstances of the child’s death, stressing that the patient was referred to its facility after receiving treatment at two paediatric centres.

According to the hospital, the child arrived in a critical condition and was referred specifically for diagnostic procedures. It stated that upon arrival, its medical team immediately commenced care in line with established clinical protocols and internationally accepted medical standards.

The hospital added that sedation was administered where clinically indicated and that its team worked collaboratively with external medical professionals recommended by the family to ensure all necessary clinical support was provided.

“Despite these concerted efforts, the patient sadly passed away less than 24 hours after presenting at our facility,” Euracare said.

The hospital said it has commenced a detailed internal investigation consistent with its clinical governance standards and best practices, noting that it remains committed to engaging transparently with all relevant clinical and regulatory processes.

While acknowledging the family’s grief, Euracare said it would continue to offer support in any way that may bring comfort during the period of mourning, even as due process takes its course.

“As medical professionals, we carry the weight of this loss deeply,” the statement said, adding that its priority remains compassion, patient safety and the responsible handling of the matter, while respecting the family’s privacy.

Euracare reaffirmed its reputation as a centre for complex medical care, led by an internationally trained clinical team, and urged the public to allow ongoing investigations to run their course.
