FAAN distances self from initial response to Emmanson’s Ibom Air incident

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified its role in the incident involving a passenger of Ibom Air, Comfort Emmanson at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MM2) in Lagos on Sunday, August 10, 2025, stating that its personnel were not part of the initial response.

In a statement issued on Friday, FAAN explained that MM2 is a privately-owned terminal operated by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, and security operations within the facility are primarily managed by Ibom Air’s security team and the Bi-Courtney Aviation Security Unit.

According to FAAN, its Aviation Security (AVSEC) officers became involved only after the passenger was transferred to the Crime Investigation and Intelligence Unit, also known as “Tango City,” for official documentation and subsequent handover to the Nigeria Police for prosecution.

“For public awareness, it is important to note that the MM2 Terminal is classified as a Private Tenant Restricted Area. Within this terminal:

“FAAN AVSEC officers are responsible for passenger and baggage screening at designated checkpoints.

– BiCourtney Aviation Security Team oversees general terminal security operations,”

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to continuous training and retraining of AVSEC officers, while stressing that only institutions certified by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) are authorised to conduct certification-related training for aviation personnel.

“FAAN remains committed to the ongoing training and retraining of our AVSEC officers,” the statement read.

FAAN assured the public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, security, and professionalism across all airport facilities nationwide.
